Today, many people are unaware of the rich geographical and biological diversity of Texas.

This richness comes as no surprise to Richard Reynolds, a fifth-generation Texas and former chief photographer of the State of Texas tourism office. Reynolds has traveled his home state for more than thirty years, exploring first with his family and later as a professional photographer.

Paired with Richard Reynolds' outstanding images are selected quotations from contemporary writers with close ties to the Lone Star State: Texas naturalist Roy Bedichek, conservationist and Fort Worth native John Graves, historian and Dallas native Joe B. Franz, and the writers of the historic Texas Writers' Program guidebook created under the Work Projects Administration. Together, words and photographs create a literary and visual exploration of Texas' wild places.
